Holy shit! I remember this show!!!

Paul Scheer and CC Insider posted about Joel Hodgson’s THE TV WHEEL

a sketch comedy show. A single stationary camera was mounted inside the center of a large rotating platform. As the platform rotated around the camera, a scene would come into view of the camera. The wheel would stop and a sketch would play out in the scene, which was often framed by some piece of appropriate artwork or prop (for the purposes of forced perspective). At the end of the scene, the wheel would rotate, carrying one scene out of the camera’s view and bringing another in, and a new sketch would begin in the new scene.

Unfortunately HBO, who ordered the pilot, passed on it. I saw this show when it aired on Comedy Central. I didn’t remember this but it featured David Cross, Paul Feig, Andy Kindler, Judd Apatow, Fred Stoller and apparently Doug Benson.

I do remember Joel opened the pilot by showing how the device worked. It was a really cool idea and very well executed. I always thought Joel was ahead of his time on these types of gimmicks. Someone give him a development deal!

Thanks Paul and CCI for taking me back!

  1. Crazy- I remember reading about this ages and ages ago, when they were developing it. I’ve never seen a second of it. Thanks!
