The cut opening scenes from STAR WARS. Thanks to Mental Floss for this one.
If you had the STAR WARS picture book, like I did, you’ll notice some familiar shots including Luke looking into the sky with his “macrobinoculars”, Luke and Biggs talking on a sand dune (Nerd Note: if you look at the pic where Ben has given Luke his first lightsaber, you can see C-3PO without his metal glove exposing Anthony Daniel’s hand. I am sooooo cool.)
This just confirms my theory that STAR WARS’ success is due just as much to Marcia Lucas, George’s ex-wife and ex-editor. Obviously she had no qualms about telling George when something sucked, a trait not shared by his editors on Episodes I, II and III. (That is not fair, they may very well have said two underwater scenes in a row of being chased by a monster in Episode I is stupid, but he’s George Lucas – he’s gonna do what he wants motherfuckers!)
Side Note: If you check out the RESERVOIR DOGS Anniversary DVD, there are some cut scenes that are GODAWFUL!!! Hey, I am sure they looked good on the page, but yech; thank god Sally Menke was there to cut it out. And Verna Fields is credited with saving JAWS from crapdom. Editors don’t get the credit they deserve. Just an occasional Oscar.
