Some comedians I know love to talk about bombing on stage. Maybe it’s the whole “facing your fear thing”, maybe it’s the whole “conquering your fear thing”, or maybe it’s the whole “sadistic glutton for punishment thing.” Philly comedian Danny Ozark says he loves to bomb. It’s kind of a social experiment. He knows his material is good and that it works 98% of the times, but that 2% just makes him all giddy.
I get very sarcastic when I bomb. I start to blame the audience. Not the best strategy folks! I am like a cornered raccoon. I’ll even crap myself in the hope the smell will scare them away. Luckily it doesn’t happen very often. Ha, ha, HA.
Anywho, in the most recent edition of Esquire, Louis CK talks about what it is like to bomb on stage. I find it fascinating when established, seasoned, professional comedians bomb. It just goes to show, even the pros have bad nights.

Hicks used to laugh at his audiences to their face for being a room full of slack-jawed yokels. That seemed to work quite nicely.
If you’re going to bomb, make another joke out of it. If it’s more material, it’s all good.

Bill Hicks had the best lines for bombing, like when he would do an especially angry part or would yell at the audience- “later we’re going to play putt-putt golf up here”.
And of course the infamous rides down the dick joke river, sit back, relax, dick jokes are on the way.
Was it Louis CK that bombed so badly at first that he didn’t go on stage for years afterwards? There’s always hope I guess…

Dick jokes are on the way… classic. If there was a proper way to bomb, Hicks figured it out. And don’t forget his “flying saucer tour”.
I’m not sure about Louis CK’s “origin story” but he’s an amazing stand-up these days. One of the best around, honestly.
